José Huidobro

Biographical note.

Argentine artist born in 1982, mainly works on sculpture and new media. Also explores poetry and writing as a visual image. He comes form a science background, with an inclination to experimental design and digital art from the Royal College of Art in London, where he studied in 2007.

He lived on the River Thames for four years, investigating the presence of water in such a city, and how to live within it and make use of it. In 2007 he set up an experimental workshop of floating devices on ‘Lots Ait,’ an island in the upper reaches of the Thames, in response to the British occupation of the falkland islands.

Whilst there he constructed the Dragon Boat, the Tank Boat (to carry drinking water across the river), and other vessels. Along with other designers and artists they held the Lots Ait Tidal Festival in 2009. In 2010 he took his challenge of living and working on water a step further, crossing the Atlantic ocean in the smallest vessel to achieve the crossing that year (Contessa 24 foot).

He founded The Reactor (www.elreactor.com), a centre of design and art in the city of Buenos Aires, with other international. This studio won BAE 2012 with a project of self multiplicating 3d machines, bringing Rep Rap into Argentina. He has held workshops on digital fabrication, electronics and art experimentation within design. His last big project was the deBrea Machine, a monumental 3d printer that works with clay from Mendoza, next to the Andes..

José was selected in 2012 to lead a workshop at Boisbuchet, a design residency funded by the design collector Alexander von Vegesack, sponsored by the Vitra Museum in France, where a wooden floating bridge was constructed in the Vienne river Conquering the Vienne Islands

His multidciplinary work, where sculpture, experimental design and technology merge into one object, challenges the material, always dialoguing with natural forces and exploring how to harness them. Understanding physics, how things move, light and deform, and provoke human fear onto this is his main exploration. He believes experimentation and failure are necessary in the process of extending what is thought of as possible

He states that his goal is to make art, not pieces of design. He rejects his work as a mass-produced object, or and experiment on the design of a new technology, but describes them as individual sculptures that reveal the sanguine process of their creation, and their functionality.

His passion, bursts from a constant desire to explore science and art. Pushing their functionality towards a new dimension, it is possible to create new technologies. Feelings, fears and vision invade his work with a meaning that connects them to human life, and the questioning of the objects that we live with. He states “When we construct, we create technology and further it”

José Huidobro nació en Buenos Aires. En el 2005 dejó la Argentina, radicándose finalmente en Londres, ingresó en el Royal College of Art, donde obtuvo un Magister en Arte MA y un Magister en Ciencia MSc.

Exhibió las “máquinas para re hacer naturaleza”, y organizo “Lots Ait” en una isla en el río Támesis en respuesta al ocupamiento inglés en Malvinas. En el 2009 realizó el Cruce Atlantis, adentrándose tres meses en el océano, para volver a la Argentina y extraer formas y estructuras de la vida marítima.

Se distingue un trabajo multidisciplinario, donde la escultura, el diseño experimental y la tecnología se fusionan en un sólo objeto. A partir de su trabajo tosco, sucio y violento, se define una crítica de la realidad material, discutiendo la funcionalidad y existencia de cada objeto y su movimiento y construcción en el espacio.

Fundador del proyecto de impresoras 3d Rep Rap para la Argentina que obtuvo el premio Ganador Buenos Aires Emprende 201Realiza Workshops en fabricación digital, electrónica y experimentación con el arte y el diseño, a nivel nacional e internacional, como el realizado en Boisbuchet, residencia a cargo del Vitra Museum, en Francia en el año 2012.
